Classmate Profile:
Shirley Barrett

I got married when I was almost 25. Hubby and I moved to Michigan where we lived for three years. We then moved to New Mexico and lived there for about three years before finally settling in Florida. On January 2, 2003, after 17 years together, my husband and I divorced. We have no children. (Ever since I was 6, or so, I knew having kids was not for me).

I currently work at the Pinellas County Jail as a clerk in the Inmate Records Department, where I process court orders (update bonds, calculate sentences, release charges) and answer questions from the public via telephone. I have worked there for 6 years.

When I have the time I love to quilt, but most of my spare time is taken up with hockey. I'm a Tampa Bay Lightning season ticket holder and I also play in a women's ice hockey league. I've been playing for 3 1/2 years.

This past season was the first year that the NHL held a contest for the biggest fan of each team called, The "Seventh Man" Contest. A winner was picked for each team from submitted entries. I was named the Seventh Man for the Lightning, earning this honor for donating money to the Lightning Foundation, which disperses donations they collect to local charities. My donation amount, $1,250, was based upon how many goals and assists Cory Sarich achieved during the season. The NHL also got a kick out of the fact that I ditched work twice to attend games when I ran out of comp/vacation time. These stunts landed me in Internal Affairs and earned me a three day suspension without pay.

On the upside for being named the "Seventh Man," I received: an authentic replica of my favorite player's jersey and a pair of tickets to a game. Also, I got to watch a practice that was closed to the public, I was interviewed by the news media and I got to drop a ceremonial puck at a game in front of 20,000+ fans.

I reside in Largo, FL with my two cats, Tucker and Blackie. (Profile written July 2003)
